federal funding strategy

INCREASING FEDERAL FUNDING FOR PANCREATIC CANCER RESEARCH

The federal government currently spends close to $5 billion on cancer research through the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), making the federal government by far the largest funder of cancer research in the United States. Thanks to the work of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the amount that the NCI has dedicated to pancreatic cancer research has steadily increased over the years, but it is still far below what is needed to make true advances in this deadly disease. In fact, currently, less than 2% of the NCI’s $4.9 billion annual budget is spent on researching pancreatic cancer.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s Government Affairs Department in Washington, DC works to educate elected officials about the importance of increasing federal funding for pancreatic cancer research and to advance legislation that will not only increase federal resources devoted to this research, but also improve the lives of current and future pancreatic cancer patients.
